If you should wind up homeless on a temporary or permanent basis, there are still plenty of ways you can cook your food when needed. You will need a Firestarter kit that generally includes a flint lighter, wood, and kindling so that you can create and feed a fire. The next step is actually cooking your food without the use of skillets, pots, or pans.
The good news is that there are several ways you can cook your food over a hot fire, all you need to do is find the right type of surface that will make it work.
1. Stick or Pole
The simplest method is to impale whatever food items you want to cook on a stick or pole and hold it over the fire. You just turn the pole so that all sides are cooked evenly and then, pull the food out from time to time to see if it is fully cooked. Naturally, you don’t want the fire to burn through your stick or have the food slip off into the fire. While this particular method works very well, it is also fairly limited in terms of the type of food you can cook. Whatever it is, it needs to be solid enough to hold up on the stick while being thoroughly cooked.
2. Flat Rock, Brick, or Metal
This particular method has been used by Native American cultures for centuries. All you need to do is find a large, flat rock and clean it off. Then prop it up over a fire using other rocks so that the airflow is not disturbed. The rock will become hot enough for you to cook food on top without actually damaging the rock itself. You can keep using the rock over and over again to cook your food. If you cannot find a rock, then bricks will do or a flat piece of metal. However, the metal might not last as long as the rock or bricks.
3. Brick Oven
Similar to a rock oven, if you are in an urban setting it will probably be easier to find bricks instead. Create a rectangular structure out of bricks with a single opening that faces the fire. All other holes or openings need to be covered in mud or dirt so that the heat stays inside the oven. Once ready, set the food just under the opening of the oven to cook. You will need to monitor the fuel to the fire and add or remove elements in order to control the temperature.
If you have a pot, you can boil your food which is a very safe way to get rid of any germs or bacteria that might be present. You can also boil water safely using a pot as well. In a survival situation, it pays to have as many useful materials as possible so that you can safely boil water and cook your food. Preparation is the key, but if you are caught without all the necessary materials, you can fashion them out of the surrounding bricks, rocks, and sticks that are nearby.
