The arrival of certain natural disasters cannot be predicted. Some natural calamities may show some signs and can be predicted by the artificial intelligence, but it is important for you to be fully prepared for such alarming situations. A natural disaster can be a cause of a lot of casualties and financial losses if one isn’t prepared for it. The emergency preparedness checklist differs for different natural calamities in some aspects. However, the basic things that you need to include in your checklist to be prepared for any kind of natural disaster includes:
Food & Water Supply
The food and water supply, you need to keep with you depend on the type and severity of the calamity. It is suggested to keep one gallon of water per person, for a day. You should keep the food items with you that do not spoil easily such as the ones that come in cans, or powdered milk, dry fruits etc. Also, you can take some other essentials with you such as can openers, a limited supply of spoons, and other dish servers etc.
If someone from your family is on medication, make sure to take medicines for at least three days. As like food and water supply, it also depends on the severity of the disaster. However, the more you keep with you, the better it will be. Other personal care items such as soaps, hand wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, glasses, antiseptics etc. should be taken. If you have elders with you, make sure that you have taken their hearing aids and walking cane with you.
Other Safety Measures
To tackle the worsening conditions, you need to be fully equipped with safety measures such as the first aid kit, an emergency blanket, and a multipurpose tool that can come in handy to be used for multiple operations such as cutting, and to be used as a screwdriver and pliers etc. On the other hand, in order to give signs of your existence at a particular place to the rescue team, you need to take a whistle or any item alike so that rescue team could identify your location and come to your aid.
An earthquake or tsunami may not leave you with enough time to get hold of your electronic equipment and take them with you. You need to get such equipment specifically to be used in such grave situations. Items such as radio (for updates), flashlight with extra batteries, and your cell phones with chargers should also be added to the emergency kit.
After you have gathered the necessary emergency supplies, pack them in such a manner that they can be used readily and easily. Check the expiry date of food items before using them in an emergency situation as expired items can cause more harm than good in already tough conditions.
Keep in mind that family dynamics differ from each other and the supplies mentioned above may not be fit for everyone. As mentioned earlier, you need to keep in consideration the type and severity of the calamity before making a checklist for tackling the situation.
