In today’s day we are very much about finding natural remedies to common ailments (and some people to more complex ones). People, including myself, are trying to get away from the traditional drugs that are being handed out because we either feel they are unsafe or that they are but we don’t want all those chemicals. But do these remedies actually work? Are they even safe?
Basic Natural Remedies That Actually Work
Let’s look at some basic home remedies. These are ones that are generally considered safe as a first point of defense. Ginger and Garlic can solve a sore throat because garlic has antimicrobial properties that fight pain-causing bacteria. Ginger also is a remedy that solves nausea and an upset stomach. When pregnant, a lot of people recommend sucking on a ginger candy or drinking ginger tea.
Chocolate during the day and honey at night can get rid of a cough. Chocolate, something that many indulge in on a daily basis can be used to get rid of that nagging in your throat. Who knew? Honey is recommended at night and also helps to promote sleep. This one however should not be given to children under one.
Aloe has been known for what seems like ever to soothe a burn on the skin, especially when it’s a beautiful summer day at the beach and we think we’re invincible. Lemons added to boiling after and honey can help boost immunity and cut a cold short.
These are just a few examples of home remedies that work and have been tested and true. But what about those that are more serious, the use of essential oils for example for people thinking they can cure asthma to cancer. People believing that their children don’t need to go to doctors or get vaccinations because they are doing them. That’s when things become unsafe and people’s lives are hanging in the balance.
Remedies that you should never try
There are remedies such as ear candling that can cause more harm than good, by burning the patient or causing damage to the ear. Another is butter on a burn. Butter, unlike aloe, can cause infection because it’s not sterile. Colloidal Silver is thought to be treatment for multiple ailments such as fungal infections, TB, HIV, herpes, and even cancer by boosting the immune system. The effect of colloidal silver is that it is toxic and can cause cell damage and death, leading to organ failure.
When it comes to home remedies, it’s quite natural to want to try something that doesn’t include medications and antibiotics, and for many things it’s also quite safe and effective. But when it comes to being truly sick, having an autoimmune disease, asthma, etc., you more than likely want to actually see a doctor. You wouldn’t treat a broken bone with a Band-Aid, so why treat serious ailments as such?
