Knowing how you can revive a dead car battery is very important for surviving both in the country-side and in urban environments. A car battery can be used to not only power a car, but it can also be used as a portable power source.
The most commonly used type of battery in vehicles use lead-acid. These batteries are also used in golf carts and ride-on lawn mowers. Luckily, most lead acid batteries work in the same way. This type of battery is prone to sulphation on the battery plates, which is what causes most dead batteries. However, as long as the battery is sound, you can remove the sulphation and revive the battery.
Check the Battery Cells
The first step to de-sulphate a battery is to check what cells are causing the battery to not charge or work. Start by charging the battery for minimum 12 hours and then disconnect the battery from its charger, then wait around 10 to 15 minutes.
Open all the battery caps. If the battery is sealed, this makes it harder. If you have access to the internet, research how to open that model of battery you are working on. However, if there is no internet, then you should leave the battery alone.
In each cell, fill the compartment with filtered water to the optimum level. This is very important since over filling or not filling it enough can lead to the battery exploding. Then you need to measure the battery terminal voltage, once the cell caps have been replaced. It should be around 11.8 to 13v for a 12v battery. If the volts are lower, one of the cells is not producing the same amounts of volts.
You will then need to check each cell to find the ones that have the lower voltage. Good cells produce around 2v. Most bad cells will have different colored plates, which come from the lead sulphate crystals.
How to Remove Sulphate
To remove sulphate from your battery, you will need to attach it to a battery trickle charge. You will need to leave it for around 7 to 10 days. The very slow charging of the battery will dissolve the sulphate affecting the battery. This will revive the battery, and once completed the battery will hold a charge.
The other option that you can use is a chemical de-sulphator. You will just need to add this chemical to the filling ports on the battery. This will dissolve the sulphation within a few hours, and works on both new and old batteries.
Reviving a dead car battery can be lifesaving, but it takes time and skill. It is recommended that you learn how to take of your batteries now because you are never sure when you will need this skill set.
