Hostage situations can primarily be described in two different ways. One is the traditional situation wherein the hostage taker is trying to utilize the hostages as leverage in the negotiation of something else. The other one is becoming more predominant and occurs when a hostage taker is bent on destruction and death to make their statement without having a goal in mind. Phase I: Capture
This is one of the most dangerous phase during hostage situation where the intruder takes control of the situation. As victim, you need to assess the intention of the intruder, stay low and avoid attention. Phase II: Internment

This may last for a couple of hours and during this time, hostage’s needs to employ the three C which are calm, connect and capitalize. Stay calm all the time. When hostages panic, the hostage taker also feels the same thing. You can stay calm by means of following the direction that the hostage taker is giving you and avoid those sensitive topics in any conversation you are going to make with the hostage taker.
You also need to connect with them. Create a bond with the hostage takes removing their interest to harm their hostages. By connecting to them, you are buying yourself time to slow things down. Encourage to negotiate with the hostage takes while keeping focus on your outside contact. While negotiating you need to capitalize by means of giving peaceful conclusion. Remain to be alert all the time to escape opportunities and rescue efforts.
Phase III: Resolution
Resolution are primarily characterized by negotiated releases which is the safest and longest outcome of hostage situation that requires calmness and patience. It also includes rescue where the success depends on the ability of the rescuer to distinguish in between the hostage taker and the hostages. This is the reason why cooperation of the hostages are very critical. Escape is one of the riskiest solution at hand.
