The most popular nuclear weapons were the ones used against Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The two bombs killed about 240,000 people altogether and also damaged properties worth billions of dollars. Even though no nuclear weapon has caused such colossal damage up till now, there are several equally deadly missiles. Some of the deadliest missiles have been outlined below.
- M51 – SLBM
This missile was created in France. This missile has a range of 10,000km and it has the capacity of carrying about ten 100kt warheads with each of the warheads having about 50 percent probability of striking within 150m of its target. Its terminal velocity is believed to be Mach 25.
- DF-31 – ICBM
This missile was produced in China. Its full name is Dong Feng 31. This missile is capable of carrying a 1 megaton warhead and has a range of about 8,000km with a circular error probability of 300m. However, it is no longer in production. It has been replaced by the improved Dong Feng 31A.
- DF-31A – ICBM
This is an improved version of Dong Feng 31. In fact, it was used to replace it. It has the ability to carry three 150kt warheads with a range of over 11,000km. Its circular error probability is said to be 150m. The most striking feature of this missile is that it can be launched from a mobile launch vehicle.
- RT-2UTTKh Topol-M – ICBM
This missile was created in Russia. The missile is also known as SS-27. Although it is being used with only one 800kt, it has a capacity for 6 and it also has additional room for decoys. It has a velocity of about 7.3km per second. It is reported to possess a circular error probability of about 200m.
- RS-24 Yars – ICBM
This equally powerful missile was also created in Russia. This is the second Russia’s creation on this list. It obviously confirms that Russia is a real force to reckon with when it comes to nuclear weapons and other ammunitions. It has a capacity for four 30kt warheads and also has highly impressive circular error probability of about 50m. This CEP is about the best so far. This missile has several similar features with Topol-M above. To make interception of this missile difficult, it can change direction in flight.
- LGM-30G Minuteman III – ICBM
This missile was made in the United States. It comes with a speed of almost 8km per second and a circular error probability of a little below 200m. It is an improved version of 450 Minuteman. It actually replaced 450 Minuteman. It carries a single 475kt warhead although it has a capacity to carry more.
The other highly sophisticated missiles are:
- R-36M2 – ICBM: Made in Russia
- Dong Feng 5A –ICBM: Made in China
- UGM-133 Trident II – SLBM: Made for both United States and United Kingdom’s marine forces
- RSM -56 Bulava – SLBM: Made in Russia
- R29RMU2 Layner – SLBM: Made in Russia
In conclusion, it is noteworthy that the missiles have not been arranged in any particular order and the number of Russian missiles in the list is really intimidating. Also take note that this list will not remain the same as several countries are continuously working on more sophisticated ones.
